What is Scleroderma?

Many people have not heard of the disease Scleroderma, but it affects about 300,000 Americans, which is a little over 0.1% of the population.  Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disease that affect the skin and the connective tissues by hardening and tightening them, and it can range from mild to life-threatening depending on the case.  In rare but severe cases of scleroderma, it can affect the heart, lungs, or kidneys and can become life-threatening. Currently, there is no known cure for the disease, but there are different treatments to help with symptoms.  Luckily, the disease is not contagious, infectious, cancerous, or malignant, so there is not worries of a widespread problem.  Despite the relatively low number of cases in our population, there still should be advocacy about the disease because it is a chronic disease that is affecting many people, including people you might know.  Therefore, go out and educate your friends and families about the issue, and support those living with the disease through your words and action!
